Bugsworth Basin is the end of the canal, where it once connected with a horse-drawn tramway that carried gritstone, limestone and burnt lime to be loaded at Bugsworth for onward carriage to Manchester, the North West and Midlands. New Mills: a History This is a very interesting linear walk, following the River Goyt for half of the way then the Peak Forest Canal to Marple. Lovely walk - dont think any of the footpaths were closed (one bridge was recently repaired). The Torrs Riverside Park offers spectacular views of the River Goyt and the gorge it has created, with interesting items of industrial archeology along the way. 07807276. The expansive park is one of the walking highlights of the area and includes a historic hall and resident deer. As a place to visit, this puts the canal alongside the best parks and other public spaces in the country, and is a huge testament to all the hard work done by volunteers and our Canal & River Trust colleagues in keeping the canal in a great way. It was a cool Sunday morning when a small group of us met up at Torkington Park in Hazel Grove for this cycle ride out to Marple and New Mills. Its relatively easy to work out as all of the footpaths are marked on the map, so it wasnt too much of a bother. Two footpaths closed but still passable. Only slight downside was having to get out of the way of all the cyclists on the canal path. Separating the two is Benjamin Outram's splendid stone Marple Aqueduct together with its slightly higher railway viaduct neighbour running parallel. Ramblers2023. The popular cycling and walking trail runs through the beautiful Sett Valley from New Mills to Hayfield, which is a great base for exploring the Kinder Plateau.
